Rent, try, buy
We stand for borrowing instead of buying and using instead of owning. Even so, we want to offer a try-and-buy option for some items. A contradiction? No.
Why this is no contradiction
Many things do not need to exist in every household. A power drill, for instance. Or a trailer. Items that are not in daily use and often take up a lot of space are best shared.
But there are also things we genuinely need often, that wear out quickly or that are personalised in some way. Here buying makes sense. What matters is that we make deliberate, well-informed purchases and enjoy the product. That way we use it for a long time, repair it, and make the most of the resources it took.
How it works
The answer is try and buy: rent first, then decide at your leisure.
Rent
Rent the item — an HD projector, say — for as long as you need it.
Try
Find out whether it is the right product for you, and whether you would use it often enough for buying to be worthwhile.
Buy — or don't
If yes, you can buy with a clear conscience. If not: no problem, it was only rented.

Try and buy is not only convenient for renters — it also gives companies a field in which to test and establish innovative, sustainable business models. It is particularly promising for makers of high-quality equipment: instead of spending heavily on advertising or luring buyers with steep discounts, a single device can earn more and return rates drop markedly.
